The QLD Local Government Chapter recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary in June 2007. The group’s aim is to network in an idea-sharing forum, discussing pertinent matters relating to records management in Queensland. A particular challenge we have set ourselves is to overcome the tyranny of distance. Queensland is a vast State with local governments tackling issues as diverse as coastal resort tourism, rainforest eco-tourism and maintenance of gravel roads in shires governing areas larger than some countries.
The duty of sharing experiences and assisting smaller, less resourced records management functions is ours. We hope that contact through this site will help us to deliver on that responsibility.
In 2005 the Local Government Chapter joined forces with the Government Owned Corporations (GOC's) for a trial period of 12 months. This trial period proved successful for both groups and the amalgamation became official in May 2006. In line with the amalgamation, the Chapter have changed their name to the Qld Local Government & Corporations Chapter - QLGCC.
The Chapter has an Action Plan with several projects identified to build and improve the group. Some of these projects/actions include:
- Investigating a mentoring program for Chapter members;
- Investigate and Assist Councils through information sharing and networking;
- Identify and promote recordkeeping process improvements and effectiveness.
A copy of the action plan can be obtained by contacting the Chapter Secretary.
The Chapter has four divisions: Central; Northern; South East and South West. Four general meetings are held each year in the South East region and, whenever possible, simultaneous meetings, with a shared agenda, are held in other regions. The meetings are typically conducted over a full day and feature at least one guest presentation, and are rotated around various host member locations. Bi-annual symposiums are held throughout the State. These symposiums are themed and are held over 2-3 days. Previous symposiums include:
- Rockhampton - 2001
- Townsville - 2002
- Cairns - 2003
- Hervey Bay - 2005 (changed from annual to bi-annual)
- Mudjimba (Novotel Twin Waters) - 2007
- Gold Coast - 2009
To be included on the Chapter delegation list contact the Chapter Secretary for your name to be added.
