Professional RM Information Sources and their Values

New Zealand’s records managers face a unique educational and continuing educational environment.

  • The available qualifications are relatively new,
  • There is no history of consistent professional education offered by tertiary institutions, and
  • In many cases, records managers study for their qualifications while working full time, effectively turning the process of qualification into continuing professional development in its own right.

As a consequence any continuing professional development may be considered by practitioners as delivering the knowledge required to do the basics of the job as well as the keeping up with changes and building on the fundamental knowledge.

Records managers everywhere – at every level – need accessible, sound, reliable information as the cornerstone of professional development.

This presentation will identify and evaluate the sources of professional information available to records managers, and considers the impact of these sources on skill levels across the profession.

It will look at the balance between knowledge obtained through recordkeeping education and knowledge obtained through continuing professional development.
