Recognition for recordkeepers at the coal-face

Currently there are over 18,000 standards (units of competency) in the New Zealand National Qualifications Framework but none at the lower levels of records management – and that is where a great majority of those involved in recordkeeping operate.

For hundreds of people who work in office situations, recordkeeping is an important part of work but not necessarily the ‘main job’.  As a result and in at least the New Zealand context, the RMAA’s programme of continuing education and professional development (CEPD) has little or no impact on people working at these operational levels.

The programme’s value would, however, increase hugely if the operational skills and knowledge of recordkeepers were codified, measured, assessed, and formally recognised through national competency standards.

Don will illustrate the urgent need for competently trained and skilled people at operational levels; how they will assist in raising the overall profile of records and information management in business.   To achieve this, he will propose a plan to provide ways for people with an involvement in records management to have their basic skills and knowledge recognised nationally.
