Barbara Reed will be presenting a keynote on Service Oriented Architectures and Recordkeeping on Tuesday.
So, how well are our electronic document and records management system (EDRMS) applications going? Are their implementations the pinnacle of development for the records management professionals? What is the life expectancy of this type of software and how do they relate to the emerging service-oriented architectures inherent in the Web 2.0 world?
These questions and others set me speculating on what an application-less records framework would involve and whether we could re-think recordkeeping into the emerging Web environment. In my explorations I stumbled quickly upon service-oriented architectures as development frameworks and started to explore the concepts of services as recordkeeping tools.
My Wellington paper will introduce the concepts of service-oriented architecture and the differences/similarities with web services, already creeping into our practice.
There is a brand new environment out there and it’s one which is conducive to innovative recordkeeping. I’m going to attempt to make connections between the two worlds of service-oriented architectures and recordkeeping and suggest some of the issues that we need to keep thinking about.
