Professor Martin Nakata will be presenting a keynote on Towards Standards and Protocols for Digitising Indigenous Materials for use in the Public Domain on Monday.

The Impact of Aboriginal Protocols for Information Services

Dr Martin Nakata is a Torres Strait Islander, an indigenous Australian. He is Chair of Australian Indigenous Education, Director of Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at University of Technology, Sydney, and board member of the Collections Council of Australia Ltd.

He has long research experience with Australian indigenous issues and has published over seventy articles in several countries.  His latest book, Disciplining the Savages – Savaging the Disciplines, will be published by Aboriginal Studies Press in 2007.

He has assisted with an International Federation of Library Institutions and Associations (IFLA) revision of its Indigenous Knowledge Statement as well as an IFLA Presidential committee on Libraries and Lifelong Learning.

In 2004, in collaboration with the Head Librarian and colleagues at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) he undertook a national study of the impact of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocols for Libraries, Archives and Information Services.

He and his colleagues from the UTS library, the UTS Law Faculty recently won a partnership grant with three state libraries to undertake in 2007 a collaborative study of Indigenous digital collections being prepared in libraries for public access & use.  This collaborative study is also to build a basis for an ARC Linkage Grant application in 2008 for a broader study of the issues across the libraries, archives, museums & galleries domain.

His work in indigenous knowledge areas has led to keynote addresses at the IFLA conference in Scotland 2002, the Special Libraries and Information Services Group’s (SLIS) conference in South Africa 2004, the Australian Library and Information Association’s (ALIA) biennial conference in Queensland 2004, and the National Library conference in Iceland in 2005.

He has delivered discussion papers for the President-elect’s program on indigenous knowledge issues at IFLA 2005 in Norway, on Digitisation and indigenous knowledge at IFLA 2006 in South Korea, and was invited to IFLA 2007 in South Africa to report progress on his research work into protocols, guides & standards for the preparation of Indigenous knowledge for use in the public domain.

In 2004 the State Library of New South Wales made Dr Nakata an Honorary Research Fellow Mitchell Library.
